Sports

We have an exciting lineup of sporting events planned for the year and would love to see as many of you as possible involved. Earlier this year, we kicked things off with Round the Bays, which was a huge success. We had runners across all categories and finished the morning celebrating together with pizza and refreshments near the finish line.

Our next event is the ASICS Waterfront Half Marathon in Auckland on 12 April 2026. There are several options depending on what you feel like tackling: a 5km fun run or walk, a 10km classic, or the full half-marathon.

After that comes Wings for Life on 10 May, hosted by Red Bull. This race is a little different because there is no set finish line. Instead, a “Catcher Car” begins chasing runners 30 minutes after the start and gradually increases its speed. Once the car passes you, your race is over. The event is run by a non-profit foundation dedicated to finding a cure for spinal cord injuries and paraplegia, making it a really meaningful way to be part of it.

Later in the year, we will also be participating in the North Shore Half Marathon on 6 September. Like the other running events, there will be different distances available so everyone can get involved regardless of experience.

Alongside these events, we also have a weekly run club every Tuesday at 7 am, starting from the Davis Law Library. During recruitment season, different law firms sponsor the run and come along themselves, shouting coffee and a snack afterwards. It is a great opportunity to start the day with some exercise, meet other law students, and network with firms.

We are also hoping to finish the year with Log o’ Wood, a major tournament between the University of Auckland, AUT, and Waikato University, where teams compete across a range of sports.

All of these events are a fantastic way for law students to meet people from different year groups, build friendships outside the classroom, and support their peers at matches and finals. We hope to see you getting involved and representing AULSS this year.

Interfaculty Tournaments

Interfaculty sport sees the Law Faculty compete against other faculties across ten sports throughout the year. In Semester One, the sports include waka ama, ki-o-rahi, esports, volleyball, and basketball. In Semester Two, the competitions continue with futsal, indoor netball, indoor cricket, and rugby 10s.

The competitions are either held on campus at the sport and recreation centre during weekdays and over the weekend at the University of Auckland fields. A number of sports are one-day tournaments and other some are weekly or longer competitions. These events are great for law students to meet others from different years and a good opportunity to support their peers at the matches and finals.
